It’s been several months since I’ve written anything, but it’s been hard to find time. My contract ended in Indiana, so I came home to Mississippi. Since it was last minute, I did not have the money saved up as a cushion. I had to find a job as fast as I could. I started feeling out applications locally as soon as I got the chance. One place did not accept online applications, so I had to go and fill out one in person. They interviewed me right after I turned it in due to my experience in welding. They offered me a position and I told them I would consider it. I wasn’t sure if I really wanted another welding position in a factory setting working 6-7 days a week. I also had a few other places to go to that morning to fill out applications. I had decided to go eat lunch. On my way, I received a phone call from a company that I had filled out an application for online early that morning. I thought to myself, wow that was fast. An interview was set up the following morning. I went to the interview not knowing what to expect. The job description was for working at an asphalt plant. It mentioned welding and general machine maintenance which I had plenty of experience in, but the rest was all new to me. I interviewed with the foreman and the superintendent. When I met these guys, there was an instant connection. They both was around my age or younger which was another good thing. They offered me the job on the spot. I immediately called my wife to not only let her know my intentions but also to have council with her on the matter. We were both worried about the pay which was a lot less than what we were used to, however, something was calling or pushing me to accept the job. I am not sure what it was specifically, but I like to think it was God telling me I needed to do this. So, I accepted the job, and the rest was history. I still fit and weld but its only when needed. The past 6 months I have been learning about the asphalt plant business. It is basically a job I never knew existed or put much thought into before. One usually sees road work and sees crew laying asphalt on the highways but not much thought is probably put into how asphalt is made before it ever gets to the road crew. It is long hours and hard work. However, I am basically living every little boy’s dream. I get to use large equipment and work with lots of dirt and rocks. When there is not enough asphalt mix to make at our plant, there is always maintenance, whether at the plant I work at, or other plants located throughout the state that need the help. I get to be home with my family every night and the people I work with are like my family as well. There are 6 of us including my boss and his boss and we all have similar personalities and look out for each other like a family.
